Before Your Appointment

Please visit your dentist for a check-up to ensure that your dental health is stable and you are ready for orthodontic treatment. If you have records from a previous orthodontist, please bring the records with you. We will assess if these records are sufficient for our diagnostic evaluation to avoid having to duplicate the procedures.

We look forward to meeting you on your first visit to our office. This 30-minute visit will give us insight into your orthodontic needs and to determine if this is the proper time to begin treatment. The cost of this initial screening exam may be covered by your insurance. To assist us, please bring your insurance card to this appointment. If diagnostic records are being taken, a records fee is due at the time of the appointment. This cost may be also covered by your insurance.

During this visit, we will provide a complete clinical diagnosis and a detailed plan that outlines your treatment, goals, and estimated fees. Costs include diagnosis, treatment, and a one-year retention period (including one set of retainers).

This appointment consists of placement of spacers between certain teeth so bands can be placed around them one week later. This appointment generally lasts about ten minutes.

Construction Appointment

Placement of your braces – brackets and bands on your teeth – takes place at this appointment. Once your braces are placed, our trained assistants will review how to care for your braces with you, including how to brush and floss as well as foods you can eat and foods to avoid. This appointment generally lasts two hours.

We encourage questions from both the patient and the parent, and as such, we provide ample time to answer your questions.

Adjustment Appointments

Once your braces are placed, they will need to be adjusted every four to eight weeks, depending on your orthodontic needs. If there are specific situations that require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule adjustment appointments accordingly.

Once your braces have been removed, the "retention phase" of treatment starts. Contrary to popular opinion, completed orthodontic treatment does not guarantee perfectly straight teeth for the rest of your life. Changes in tooth position are a lifelong, naturally occurring phenomenon. Retainer wear ensures that your teeth remain where your doctor placed them. While we typically follow our patients for one year after brace removal, we recommend that you wear your retainers indefinitely. Please remember to always bring your retainers to your retainer check appointments as they may need to be adjusted to maintain your beautiful smile.

Late/Missed Appointments

Appointments are an important part of your treatment. Orthodontic treatment, for the most part, is always "active". This is why we must see you at given and appropriate time intervals. It is not only to continue with the original treatment plan, but, just as importantly, to make sure things go as intended.

Please appreciate that your scheduled appointment time has been reserved specifically for you. Please arrive on time for your appointments.

If you cannot make a scheduled appointment, give us a call. We request 24-hour notice for cancellations or changes to the appointment time. If you miss too many appointments, you compromise our ability to achieve an adequate treatment outcome and we will withdraw from care. You will then be asked to come in to have your appliances removed or to continue treatment elsewhere.
