Richard K. Vehe, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, has been the Director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology since its establishment in 1997. He completed the MD/MA program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, residency and chief residency in Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota, and fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology at the University of Washington, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, and Virginia Mason Research Center in Seattle where he had a special interest in the role of HLA class II gene expression and regulation in autoimmune diseases.

He is board certified in Pediatric Rheumatology, is past chair of the Subboard of Pediatric Rheumatology for the American Board of Pediatrics, and continues to help with the development of materials for the Maintenance of Certification program.

He has provided care for children with rheumatic diseases at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare since 1993, and at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital since 1995.

At the University of Minnesota he is the site principal investigator for collaborative research studies conducted by the Pediatric Rheumatology Collaborative Study Group and the Childhood Arthritis & Rheumatology Research Alliance, and is the site “sponsor” for activities with the Pediatric Rheumatology Clinical Outcomes Improvement Network (PR-COIN).

He coordinates the educational experience in Pediatric Rheumatology for residents in the UM Pediatrics and Pediatric/Internal Medicine programs, and has been a frequent lecturer at local, regional, and national medical educational conferences.

He has been a volunteer with the Arthritis Foundation, as the Medical Editor for the Arthritis Foundation’s national wellness newsletter “Kids Get Arthritis Too” and the book "Raising A Child With Arthritis,” and is the 2019 recipient of the Earl Brewer Award for Physician Leadership from the Arthritis Foundation.

He also has an interest in medical informatics, serving as the Informatics Medical Director for Ambulatory Pediatrics for UM Health/Fairview, a member of the informatics committee of PR-COIN, and as an elected volunteer member of the Rheumatology Steering Board for Epic Systems Corporation.
